Working Holiday Visa Requirements for Australia
Australia's working holiday program is one of the most accessible ways to live, work, and travel across the country for up to 12 months β and potentially longer. Two visa subclasses cover the program: the Subclass 417 and Subclass 462, with eligibility determined entirely by your passport country. Getting the right documents together before you apply is the single biggest factor in avoiding delays.
Landing in a new country without a network is the hardest part of any working holiday. Tequila Sunrise hostels in Sydney, Brisbane, Adelaide, and the Gold Coast are built around that transition β with daily breakfast and free social dinners giving new arrivals a practical, low-cost base while they get their footing.

Understanding Australia's Two Working Holiday Visas
Australia's working holiday program splits into two visa categories. Your citizenship determines which applies, and while both share core conditions, the eligible country lists and some entry requirements differ.
Both visas grant a 12-month stay, allow multiple entries and exits, permit work with any single employer for up to six months, and allow study or training for up to four months (17 weeks).
Subclass 417 (Working Holiday Visa)
The 417 is available to passport holders from a broad list of countries including the United Kingdom, Canada, Germany, France, Japan, South Korea, Ireland, Italy, and Sweden, among others. It carries no formal educational prerequisites, making it the more straightforward of the two options.
Subclass 462 (Work and Holiday Visa)
The 462 covers citizens from countries including the United States, Argentina, China, Indonesia, Israel, Peru, Thailand, and Vietnam. Some nationalities applying under this subclass must meet additional requirements β typically holding a high school diploma or equivalent qualification, and in some cases demonstrating functional English.
Key Eligibility Criteria and Budget Planning
Meeting core eligibility requirements is non-negotiable β and several of them directly shape your financial planning from day one.
- Age: You must be 18β30 at the time of application. Citizens of Canada, France, Ireland, and a small number of other countries can apply up to age 35.
- Proof of funds: You must demonstrate access to at least AUD $5,000 to cover initial living costs, plus sufficient funds for a return flight home. Bank statements are the standard evidence.
- Health and character: All applicants must satisfy Australia's health and character standards. Depending on nationality and travel history, this may require a medical examination and police clearance certificates from any country where you've lived for 12 months or more in the past 10 years.
- No dependent children: You cannot bring dependent children on either visa subclass.
That AUD $5,000 requirement goes fast if your first weeks are expensive. At our Adelaide hostel, guests regularly use the free daily breakfast and social dinners to keep food costs under control while they secure their first job β stretching their arrival fund significantly further than those staying in serviced apartments or short-term rentals.
Your WHV Application Checklist and Process
Applications are submitted entirely online through the Australian Department of Home Affairs ImmiAccount portal. Have every document ready before you begin β partial applications cause delays. Scan everything in colour and arrange certified translations into English for any document not originally in English.
